Former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka have filed separate writ petitions at the Supreme Court seeking to halt the party’s 15th General Convention.
They filed the petitions at the Supreme Court on Monday through their authorized representatives.
The Nepali Congress central committee had announced a schedule to hold its 15th general convention from October 2 to 5.
The party’s central election committee recently published the schedules for conventions at the lower levels while retaining the previously announced schedule for the general convention. Challenging the move, Deuba and Khadka submitted separate petitions at the Supreme Court through their representatives on Monday.
Earlier, Deuba and Khadka had petitioned the Supreme Court seeking a review of its decision concerning the party’s special general convention, and the court allowed the review. Deuba, Khadka, and other members of the non-establishment faction therefore argue that the general convention should not be held until that case is finally settled.
Supreme Court Joint Registrar Arjun Prasad Koirala confirmed that two writ petitions had been received.
“Two writ petitions related to the Nepali Congress general convention have been received,” he said. “We are currently studying them.”
Deuba and Khadka have sought to annul the convention schedule released by the party’s election committee.
The Deuba faction had also approached the Supreme Court with a writ petition on August 21, but withdrew it after being told that some corrections were needed.
Deuba’s faction did not participate in the special general convention held in January.
