Former Nepali Congress general secretary Shashank Koirala, who is also the coordinator of the national gathering being organized by the party’s non-establishment faction from August 14 to 16, has demanded that all party decisions, including the upcoming general convention, be kept in their current status.
Koirala sent a letter to party President Gagan Thapa, the party’s central committee, the Election Commission, and others, urging them not to implement or alter decisions related to the general convention and other party matters for the time being.
The Nepali Congress faction led by then-party president Sher Bahadur Deuba boycotted the special general convention held in January.
The special general convention was recognized by both the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. Deuba and party leader Purna Bahadur Khadka later approached the Supreme Court challenging the court’s decision, and the Supreme Court recently granted permission to review the case.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to allow a review of the case concerning the party, Koirala sent the letter on Tuesday, demanding that the upcoming general convention and all other party decisions be kept in their current status until the matter is resolved.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress central committee meeting is currently underway.
NC President Thapa had previously said that the party’s 15th general convention would be held from October 2 according to the predetermined schedule, and that the timetable for conventions at lower levels could be revised by the central committee.
