The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has stated that the government's attention has been drawn to the incident in Sunsari and appealing for the maintenance of religious tolerance, mutual unity, and social harmony.
The PMO made the appeal in a statement issued on Tuesday evening amid growing calls for Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s proactive involvement over tensions in Dewangunj of Sunsari, which have remained unresolved since Sunday night.
The statement, issued by the PMO’s spokesperson, Joint Secretary Hemraj Aryal, states, "The Government of Nepal pays heartfelt tribute to the person who lost their life during the incident and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured individuals and security personnel."
The PMO stated that arrangements have been made for the free medical treatment of those injured in the incident.
Furthermore, the release mentions that the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the facts of the incident and submit a report within seven days, including measures to be adopted to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future, and that the committee has already begun its work.
The PMO has stated that the Government of Nepal is committed to providing appropriate compensation to the victims and taking stern legal action against the guilty, adding, "The Government of Nepal fully believes that the resolution of any problem, discontent, or dispute is not possible through violence or confrontation."
The PMO has appealed to maintain the religious tolerance, mutual unity, and social harmony that Nepali society has practiced for centuries, and urged people not to engage in activities that disrupt it and harm religious and communal tolerance.
It has also appealed to all parties concerned not to spread incitement or misleading information, and to exercise high restraint without being influenced by such misinformation.
"The Government of Nepal cordially appeals to all political parties, civil society, religious organizations, mass media, and the general public to maintain peace and order, and social and religious harmony in the country," the release states.
