Senior Nepali Congress leader Gopal Man Shrestha has passed away.
According to Nepali Congress Acting Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal, leader Shrestha passed away on Tuesday.
Dulal said that the party will soon issue a press release with detailed information regarding the matter.
Leader Shrestha was undergoing treatment for some time at Helios Hospital located in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, where he passed away.
Arrangements are being made to keep Shrestha's mortal remains at the party’s central office in Sanepa for paying final tributes on Wednesday morning, followed by a funeral procession and cremation at Pashupati Aryaghat.
Shrestha was recently appointed as a senior leader by the Nepali Congress. He was honored with the position of senior leader in recognition of his contributions to the party.
Shrestha had been suffering from cancer for the past year and received treatment at various hospitals in Nepal and India.
He had also participated in the inaugural session of the special general convention held in January.
Shrestha was elected as a member of Parliament multiple times from Syangja. He also served as a minister for physical planning, forests, industry, and education, among other portfolios.
He spent a total of five years in prison at various times for political reasons.
Shrestha also served as the acting president of Nepali Congress (Democratic).
