Government spokesperson and Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel has said that the two-day weekly holiday will remain in effect.
Government offices and educational institutions currently observe holidays on Saturdays and Sundays.
The government had introduced Sunday holidays as well, citing difficulties in the supply of petroleum products.
Speaking to journalists at the ministry on Friday, Minister Pokharel said that the two-day weekly holiday will continue.
“Make full use of the two-day weekly holiday provided for educational institutions and government offices. There will be no reconsideration on this decision,” she said.
Minister Pokharel said that he has long supported the campaigns led by Dr Govinda KC and that informal discussions are being held with him.
He also said that the government will not back down from the provision requiring educational consultancy businesses to deposit Rs 2.5 million as security.
Minister Pokharel clarified that the provision introduced through the Educational Consultancy, Language Teaching, and Preparation Classes Operation and Management Regulations, 2026, based on the suggestions of some business owners themselves, will not be withdrawn.
In response to a journalist's question about whether the government would back down regarding the consultancy business just as it did from the 3 percent equity fee on private education, Minister Pokharel said that there is no such intention.
He also said that consultations will be held with stakeholders before formulating laws such as the School Education Act.
He added that newly appointed vice-chancellors have been urged to move forward with their concept papers to make universities autonomous and free from partisan influence.
