The government has formed a judicial inquiry committee in accordance with the agreement reached with the family of Ganesh Nepali, who died after setting himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwar.
Government spokesperson and Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel said that a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday formed a judicial committee headed by former high court judge Keshav Prasad Bastola to investigate the facts surrounding Nepali’s death.
The formation of an inquiry committee was one of the nine points included in the agreement reached on July 12 between the District Administration Office, Kathmandu Metropolitan City, and the victim’s side. The family agreed to receive Nepali’s body following the nine-point agreement.
The agreement stated that the Nepal government would form an independent inquiry committee led by a former judge to investigate the facts of the incident.
Under the agreement, the committee must submit its report to the government within seven days of its formation.
Based on the report, the Nepal government is expected to initiate the necessary process to declare Nepali a martyr.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the government by Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel and Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain.
Likewise, the agreement was signed on behalf of the victim’s family and the negotiation committee by 13 individuals, including Nepali’s wife, Ek Maya Nepali; his mother, Sauri Nepali; his elder brother, Madan Nepali; his younger sister, Sundari Nepali; and negotiation committee members Dharmaraj Shahi, Bhakta Bahadur Rawat, and Man Nepali.
