The Supreme Court has issued a short-term interim order preventing the arrest of Nepali Congress lawmaker Abhishek Pratap Shah.
A single bench of Justice Abdul Aziz Musalman issued the order following a hearing on Wednesday, directing that Shah not be arrested until another order is issued.
The written order has not yet been released, although the Supreme Court has already published information about the order on its website.
Shah is accused of involvement in a group assault on Sitaram Sharma, president of the Krishna Nagar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Sharma had filed a police complaint alleging that a group of 15 to 20 people, including lawmaker Shah and Krishna Nagar Municipality Mayor Rajat Pratap Shah, came to his house and assaulted him.
Police registered a case based on Sharma’s complaint and initiated legal proceedings.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Ripendra Kumar Singh, information officer at the District Police Office, Kapilvastu, had said that a case had been registered against Shah and that the court had issued an arrest warrant.
Shah approached the Supreme Court after the arrest warrant was issued.
Shah was elected to the House of Representatives from Kapilvastu Constituency No. 3 on a Nepali Congress ticket.
