The Nepali Congress faction led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba is set to organize a separate event to mark BP Memorial Day.
While the establishment faction is preparing for various events, including a “Green Run,” the Deuba faction is planning to hold a separate event in Kathmandu.
Speaking at a press conference held on Sunday at the faction’s liaison office in Chundevi, leader Min Bahadur Bishwakarma announced that the event would be held on July 22 to mark the 44th BP Memorial Day.
“It has been decided to commemorate the 44th memorial day of Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, founding leader of the Nepali Congress and the first democratically elected prime minister, in a grand manner at the Nepal Academy hall in Kathmandu on July 22,” Bishwakarma said. “An organizing committee has been formed under the coordination of former vice-president Prakash Man Singh to manage the event.”
According to him, the date, time and venue for a national gathering will be announced during the same event. The Deuba faction, which did not participate in the special general convention held in January, has already held provincial gatherings and is now preparing to organize a national gathering.
Bishwakarma also said that preparations were underway to hold a “national gathering” in Kathmandu within the month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) to review the party’s internal disputes and the current political situation.
The Deuba faction has also accused the party leadership of trying to move forward unilaterally, saying that efforts to maintain party unity have failed to produce results.
“Although discussions have been held repeatedly to maintain unity within the party, consensus has not been reached because the leadership has failed to show the necessary flexibility and readiness,” he said. “There is no certainty about when the dispute will end, but hope for reconciliation always remains. With this belief, talks and discussions have continued, but so far those discussions have not been meaningful or productive. We have therefore concluded that the possibility of unity is weakening.”
Leaders including Bimalendra Nidhi, Shashank Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, and Prakash Sharan Mahat were present at Sunday’s press conference.
