The Department of Money Laundering Investigation has issued a notice to Jaybir Deuba, the son of former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
On Monday, officials from the department posted a notice outside the Deuba residence – which is currently being demolished – in Budhanilkantha Municipality-2.
With this, an investigation has also been launched against Jaybir on allegations related to money laundering.
The letter instructs Jaybir to appear at the department's office in Harihar Bhawan, Lalitpur, within seven days. It further notes that if he fails to appear, action will be taken in accordance with the law.
"In the course of the inquiry/investigation/inquiry into money laundering offenses, certain matters need to be clarified with you. Therefore, this notice is issued requiring you to appear at the office of this department located in Block B of the Employees Provident Fund Building in Harihar Bhawan, Lalitpur, within seven days from the date of publication of this notice, excluding travel time, during office hours. If you fail to appear, action will be taken in accordance with the law," the letter states.
This notice was also published in the Gorkhapatra newspaper on Tuesday.
After department representatives visited the Deuba residence on Monday, local police and Ward Chairman of Budhanilkantha Municipality-2, Rajendra Shrestha, were also informed.
Ward Chairman Shrestha said that he had already informed the Deuba family about the notice.
"After the department posted the letter, I contacted the family to inform them," he said.
The department is also investigating former prime minister Deuba and his wife, former foreign minister Arzu Rana.
Previously, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had also issued a similar letter to Rana for investigation into the e-passport case.
The Deuba couple has been in Hong Kong for the past four months. On March 20, their secretariat said that the couple had traveled to Hong Kong for further medical treatment and family engagements. Although it was stated at the time that they would return within a week or 10 days, they have not yet returned.
