The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has secured nearly 4 percent of the votes in Kathmandu.
Based on the votes received by candidates across Kathmandu's 10 constituencies, the NCP, led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has shrunk to below 5 percent.
According to data published on the Election Commission's website, a total of 463,342 valid votes were cast in the first-past-the-post (FPTP) election across Kathmandu's 10 constituencies. Of these, NCP candidates received 18,343 votes, which amounts to 3.89 percent.
Before the election, the NCP was formed by merging more than 20 small leftist factions, including the CPN (Maoist Center) led by Dahal and the CPN (Unified Socialist) led by Madhav Kumar Nepal. Despite entering the election as a potentially strong leftist force, the NCP failed to save its deposit in the capital.
Candidates receiving less than 10 percent of valid votes forfeit the deposit money paid during nomination; the Election Commission does not refund it.
In 4 out of Kathmandu's 10 constituencies, NCP candidates did not even reach 1,000 votes.
In Kathmandu-1, NCP candidate Menuka Bhandari received only 345 votes. She finished seventh. RSP, won the election, with the Nepali Congress (NC) finishing second, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) third, CPN-UML fourth, Ujyalo Nepal Party (UNP) fifth, and Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) sixth.
In Kathmandu-3, Niraj Lama of the NCP received 518 votes. He finished sixth. RSP won the constituency. Ujyalo Nepal finished second, followed by the NC, UML, and RPP.
In Kathmandu-4, Indra Kumar Bhusal received 657 votes. He finished seventh, behind RSP, NC, UML, RPP, UNP, and SSP candidates.
In Kathmandu-5, Kalpana Sharma received 574 votes. She also finished seventh, behind RSP, NC, UML, RPP, UNP, and SSP.
In Kathmandu-2, NCP candidate Nitesh Paudel received 1,912 votes, finishing fifth. Sunil KC of the RSP won this constituency. The NC finished second, followed by the RPP, and UML.
In Kathmandu-6, Himal Sharma (Hemlal) received 1,164 votes. He finished fifth. (Sharma is a former president of the Maoist Center's student wing.) The top four parties were the RSP, NC, UML, and RPP.
In Kathmandu-7, Basanta Manandhar finished third, securing 3,667 votes. The RSP won this constituency, too, with the NC in second place.
In Kathmandu-8, Suman Sayami finished second with 3,217 votes. However, RSP candidate Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, who won the election, received nearly eight times the votes of Sayami.
In Kathmandu-9, Radha Krishna Maharjan received 1,328 votes. He finished sixth. The top five parties were the RSP, NC, UML, RPP, and UNP.
In Kathmandu-10, Rupa Maharjan received 2,648 votes. She finished fourth. The RSP won the election, ahead of the NC and UML.
The NCP was able to cross 3,000 votes only in Kathmandu-7 and 8.
In 2008, the then-CPN (Maoist) won 4 constituencies in Kathmandu. Pushpa Kamal Dahal was elected from Kathmandu-10.
At the time, Jhakku Subedi defeated then-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal in Kathmandu-2. Hitendra Dev Shakya won Kathmandu-6 and Hisila Yami won Kathmandu-7.
However, in the 2013 election, the Unified CPN (Maoist) could not win any seats in Kathmandu. In 2017, the Maoist Center contested under the left alliance but again failed to register a win. Maoist candidates – Hitman Shakya in Kathmandu-10 and Jhakku Subedi in Kathmandu-6 – lost the election.
In 2022, the Maoist Center fielded candidates in two constituencies under an alliance with the Nepali Congress: Kalpana Dhamala in Kathmandu-9 and Manushi Yami Bhattarai in Kathmandu-7. Neither won.
The Maoist presence in Kathmandu has been steadily shrinking. Despite incorporating leaders and workers from the Unified Socialist under the NCP banner this time, it failed to achieve success yet again.
