CPN-UML candidate from Siraha-4 Dharmanath Prasad Sah was still in Nepali Communist Party (NCP) until January 19.
Sah claimed candidacy from NCP but did not get the ticket. NCP made Ajay Shankar Nayak the candidate. After that, he returned to UML which made him the candidate.
Sah—who was candidate from CPN (Unified Socialist) formed after splitting from UML on behalf of the then-ruling coalition in 2022—was defeated by Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) candidate Birendra Mahato. Mahato had won due to UML-JSP alliance.
While Mahato secured 24,102 votes, Birendra Prasad Sah of Janamat Party secured 16,294 votes. Dharmanath Prasad, who finished third, received only 14,656 votes. Bimal Kumar Tiwari of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured 1,683 votes.
Dharmanath Prasad had defeated Pradeep Giri of Nepali Congress (NC) as a UML candidate from the same constituency in 1999. With candidacy of Dharmanath Prasad, who also became minister of state for general administration in 2006, five former ministers have become candidates in Siraha-4 this time.
NCP candidate Nayak also became law minister in 2016. He became federal lawmaker through the proportional representation (PR) system in 2013 from the then CPN (Maoist Center), now NCP.
Mahato, who won the election in 2022, is a candidate from the CK Raut-led Janamat Party this time. Mahato became the forest minister in 2023.
Raj Kishore Yadav has filed his candidacy from JSP this time. Yadav was victorious from Siraha-2 in the 2022 election. In 2017, however, he was victorious from Siraha-4 itself. Yadav, who won the election in 2008 from the then Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum, had lost in 2013.
Yadav, who became minister for communication and information technology in the then Baburam Bhattarai-led government in 2012, served as minister for industry, commerce, and supplies for a short period in 2021.
Another former minister who is a candidate in this constituency is Biswendra Paswan. Paswan, who became lawmaker through PR system in 2008 and 2013, became minister for science and technology in 2016. Paswan is a candidate from Bahujan Shakti Party this time.
NC has fielded Chandrakala Kumari Yadav from this constituency this time. Similarly, Tapeshwar Yadav is the candidate from Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
Janamat Party received the highest number of votes in the PR category from this constituency in 2022 election with 16,160 votes. JSP was second with 10,851 votes followed by UML (9,107) and Maoist Center (6,665). Similarly, NC got 6,219 PR votes while Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) Nepal secured 3,779 votes. The then Unified Socialist (now NCP) secured 3,086 votes while RSP got 1,800.
In the 2022 local elections, UML won the most wards in this constituency. This constituency includes 41 wards, including Mirchaiya Municipality, Karjanha Municipality, Kalyanpur Municipality, three wards of Bishnupur Rural Municipality, and three wards of Naraha Rural Municipality.
UML won 15 wards out of them, JSP nine, and Maoist Center six. NC won five while Janamat and Unified Socialist won two each. Independent candidates won two wards.
