Sunil Bahadur Thapa of the Nepali Congress has been elected unopposed to the National Assembly from Koshi province.
The Office of the Election Officer in Koshi province made a formal announcement of Thapa’s unopposed election on Sunday. The office stated that Thapa was elected under Section 25 of the National Assembly Member Election Act, 2018.
Thapa was declared elected unopposed as only his candidacy was registered for the single vacant seat under the “Others” cluster, according to the notice issued by the election officer.
Thapa is a former minister and a senior leader of the Nepali Congress. While he has been elected unopposed from the “Others” cluster, voting for the remaining clusters will proceed as scheduled, the election office said.
Thapa was guaranteed a seat in the National Assembly after Hemraj Ghimire, the Nepali Communist Party candidate, failed to arrive at the election office within the stipulated time to file his nomination.
