Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balen Shah has announced his support for former chief justice Sushila Karki to lead an interim government.
He also urged President Ram Chandra Paudel to immediately form an interim government and dissolve the federal parliament.
Shah made his views public in a social media status update late Wednesday night. "I fully support the proposal that has come from you all for former chief justice Sushila Karki to lead this interim/electoral government. I want to express my heartfelt respect for your wisdom, prudence, and unity," he wrote.
Previously, a group of Gen Z youth had agreed on Karki's name and proposed it to the Chief of the Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel. However, other youth groups gathered outside the Army Headquarters were chanting the names of Dharan Mayor, Harka Sampang, and Shah himself.
This is the statement Shah posted on social media:
The country is currently in a unique situation, unlike anything in its history. You are taking a step toward a golden future.
At this time, please do not panic, be patient. The country is now moving toward an interim government that will hold new elections. The job of this interim government is to hold elections and give the country a new mandate.
I fully support the proposal that has come from you all for former chief justice Sushila Karki to lead this interim/election government. I want to express my heartfelt respect for your wisdom, prudence, and unity. This shows how mature you all are.
To my friends who are in a hurry to take the lead right now, I want to say this: Your passion, your ideas, and your honesty are what the country needs permanently, not temporarily. For that, there will be elections. Please do not rush.
Honorable president, please immediately form an interim government and dissolve the parliament to protect the historic revolution brought about by Gen Z.
