The Supreme Court has dismissed a writ petition filed by Mukul Dhakal, demanding that he be retained as the general secretary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
A bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Sunil Kumar Pokharel dismissed Dhakal’s petition on Tuesday.
Dhakal had filed the petition on June 25, claiming that he remained the RSP’s general secretary. He had named the RSP office, central committee, current General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti, spokesperson Manish Jha, and party President Rabi Lamichhane as respondents.
Dhakal had requested details of the RSP from the Election Commission. The commission provided details that showed Dhakal was still listed as the party’s general secretary.
A meeting of the RSP held in Jaleshwar of Mahottari from November 27 to 29, 2023, had made changes to the party’s office-bearers and members. The RSP had updated these details with the Election Commission.
A secretariat meeting held in August 2024 had taken action against Dhakal, expelling him even from ordinary membership. However, this decision was not updated with the Election Commission.
After the Election Commission recognized Mukul Dhakal as the party’s general secretary, the RSP drew the commission’s attention to the matter.
On June 21, a central committee meeting of the RSP assigned the responsibility of general secretary to Kabindra Burlakoti.
