The Nepali Congress central committee meeting began on Monday afternoon at the party’s central office in Sanepa.
The meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m., started after a slight delay.
The meeting will discuss issues including active membership renewal and whether or not to extend the terms of sister organizations that have failed to hold their conventions.
Before the meeting began, the Nepal Students' Union (NSU) and the Tarun Dal staged protests outside the party’s central office in Sanepa demanding conventions of their organizations. Disgruntled members of the Tarun Dal launched fast-unto-death at the entrance of the party’s central office on Monday, while the dissatisfied faction of the NSU staged a demonstration in front of the party office.
The Nepali Congress central committee consists of 168 members.
The party had not convened a central committee meeting for the past 10 months.
NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba had been making necessary decisions through the central working committee after holding discussions with current and former office-bearers of the party.
As per the Nepali Congress statute, the central committee must meet at least once every two months.
