Members of rival factions threw chairs at each others as they clashed during the eighth district convention of the CPN-UML in Dhanusha on Tuesday.
A delegate said that a dispute arose between the factions of Secretary Raghubir Mahaseth, central member Umashankar Argariya, and outgoing chairman Rajkishor Yadav at the ongoing convention in Janakpur on Tuesday.
The UML Dhanusha convention began on Sunday.
An election schedule was published on Monday for selecting a new leadership. The dispute erupted at the time of publishing the final list of candidates after filing of candidacies.
"Central member Argariya and outgoing chairman Yadav’s group abused Bijay Subba, the head of the central election commission who had come to conduct the election, and also vandalized computers and laptops in the election committee's office," the delegate said.
The delegate accused the group of central member Argariya and outgoing chairman Yadav of trying to sabotage the election out of fear of losing.
Bhola Yadav and Laxmi Narayan Yadav have registered their candidacies for chairman. Bhola is from the Mahaseth faction, while Laxmi Narayan belongs to the Umashankar-Rajkishor faction.
Lilanath Shrestha, a UML standing committee member, is the Madhes province in-charge. The delegate said that slogans were also raised against Shrestha alleging that his role in organizing the convention was deemed suspicious.
There are 630 representatives in UML Dhanusha convention.
Among the 77 district chapters of UML, Dhanusha was the only remaining district yet to hold its convention.
