Resham Chaudhary, the patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), has been arrested.
Chaudhary was taken into custody by police on Wednesday noon at the Nepal Academy in Kamaladi, Kathmandu.
An event was being organized at the Nepal Academy hall to announce the unification of the Janamat Party and the NUP. Chaudhary was arrested before the event could begin.
“We have taken Resham Chaudhary into custody and sent him to Dilli Bazar Prison,” Superintendent of Police Apil Raj Bohara at the District Police Range, Kathmadu, told Setopati.
Senior Superintendent of Police Bishwa Adhikari said that Chaudhary was arrested to implement the Supreme Court’s verdict.
“In accordance with the Supreme Court’s order in its latest verdict on the Tikapur incident that he (Chaudhary) be kept in prison, we have taken him into custody and handed him over to Dilli Bazar Prison to enforce the verdict,” Adhikari told Setopati.
Janamat Party Chairman CK Raut said that Nepal Police arrested Chaudhary from the event venue just as the party unification was about to be announced.
“We have received information that just as the party unification was about to be announced at the Nepal Academy, Nepal Police arrested Resham Chaudhary from the event venue and sent him to Dilli Bazar Prison to implement an old verdict. We strongly condemn this action. Therefore, today’s unification event has been postponed, and all leaders and cadres have been requested to return to their homes. We will hold a meeting and issue another notice soon,” Raut said.
