The provincial assembly meeting has been adjourned following vandalism by Nepali Congress (NC) lawmakers protesting the proposal to name Province 5 Lumbini and make Rapti Valley the capital on Monday.
Speaker Purna Gharti Magar has called the meeting for Tuesday noon.
NC lawmakers earlier tried to stop Internal Affairs and Law Minister Kul Prasad KC from going to the rostrum to present the proposal and started to smash chairs after the minister presented the proposal for discussion.
The main opposition party is against the decision to transfer the provincial capital from Butwal and is demanding the proposal to make Dang the provincial capital be revoked. The assembly meeting was earlier adjourned as NC lawmakers chanted slogans against changing of capital.
Speaker Gharti Magar gave time to Minister KC to present the proposal amidst protest by NC lawmakers after the meeting resumed. They tried to stop him from presenting the proposal and resorted to vandalism once it was presented.
Ruling CPN earlier on the day issued whip on its lawmakers to vote in support of the proposal to name the province Lumbini and make Rapti Valley the capital. CPN is divided on the issue with 14 lawmakers against the decision to make Deukhuri the permanent capital instead of Butwal which is the temporary capital now.
