Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Gagan Thapa has urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to announce public health emergency to handle the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Do announce public health emergency for at least two weeks in Kathmandu and other hotspots where infection is surging to stop the spread and facilitate treatment," Thapa has said in a letter written to draw PM Oli's attention on Tuesday.
He has urged the government to not sleep inside Baluwatar keeping the people inside their house in the two weeks though.
Thapa, who is a former health minister, has pointed that the frightening situation has arrived due to insensitivity, arrogance and indolence of the government despite unwavering support from everyone. "Corona did not wait saying PM and ministers are busy in the works of their party and factions," he reminded. "107 persons have died by Bhadra 1 (Monday). The number of infections across the country has reached 27,241."
Reminding that NC has repeatedly been drawing the government's attention to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has accused the government of failing to work properly for its control despite getting sufficient time.
"Saving the people's life should be your first priority," he has suggested. "Does the PM have latitude to change topic on whims and spend all his time on interests-driven party dispute ignoring this crisis? He does not and should not."
