Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Shashank Koirala has questioned the recent political activities of President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
He has said the rising involvement of President Bhandari in the internal politics of ruling CPN in recent days has raised questions about neutrality of the institution of presidency.
Addressing a program organized to mark the 38th death anniversary of BP Koirala on Tuesday, he pointed that such role and involvement of President Bhandari can make people feel that monarchy was better than republicanism. "The crowd saying monarchy is better than republicanism has increased due to activities of the president. Her activities have sent a message that she is president of CPN and not Nepal," he added.
He claimed that many are pointing at her involvement and saying the kings at least were neutral.
CPN Chairman and Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli and fellow Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal have recently intensified their meetings with President Bhandari amidst escalating internal dispute in the ruling party.
Talking about NC, Koirala said only one candidate will contest for party president against Sher Bahadur Deuba in the upcoming general convention. But he did not reveal who that consensus candidate will be and just said discussions are on.
He also accused Deuba of trying to influence the general convention by forming and completing departments when the general convention has already been announced.
The party is scheduled to hold the 14th general convention in February 2021.
