The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) is likely to send Suvarna Jwarchan to the House of Representatives (HoR) to replace Gyan Kumari Chhantyal who passed away Wednesday.
The 63-year-old from Baglung breathed her last at the Shahid Ganga Lal National Heart Center in Kathmandu Wednesday morning.
A central committee member confided with Setopati that the party will send Jwarchan from Gulmi to the House as replacement. The party can nominate Chhantyal's replacement as she was elected through the proportional representation system.
Jwarchan was immediately below Chhantyal among women (janajati) in the closed list for PR the party sent to the Election Commission before the general election.
The HoR election regulation requires the replacement also to be from the closed list sent to the Election Commission if someone dies before completion of the term.
The Federal Parliament Secretariat and the party will have to inform the Election Commission about Chhantyal's death to pave the way for Jwarchan's appointment.
Jwarchan has been active in NC for a long time and had participated during the plebiscite for democracy in 1980 and the struggle against the Panchayat regime for democracy.
She also served as minister of state for urban development in the then Pushpa Kamal Dahal led coalition government with the Maoists after being appointed on November 30, 2016.
