Province 2 could not decide about the name and capital on Tuesday.
Four proposals for name and three for capital were rejected through voting that started at 10 Tuesday morning and continued till two Wednesday morning. Name and capital of the province can be decided only with two-third majority.
Speaker of the provincial assembly Saroj Kumar Yadav told Setopati that the name and capital will now be decided only by the next session of the assembly. "All the proposals for name and capital have been rejected. This session will conclude in a few days. The next session will decide on this."
But it will not be easy even in the next session as the ruling coalition of Socialist Party Nepal and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJP) does not have two-third majority in the assembly and need support of CPN or Nepali Congress (NC) to reach the magical figure of 72 in the 107-strong assembly.
Socialist Party Nepal has 30 lawmakers, RJP 25, CPN 32, NC 19 and Federal Socialist Nepal one in the provincial assembly.
The name of Madhesh proposed by the ruling coalition received 60 votes.
CPN and NC, like the ruling coalition, also are in favor of continuing with temporary capital Janakpur as the permanent one but they have not supported the ruling parties even in capital after failing to agree on the name.
CPN had proposed Janaki as the name, NC Mithila-Bhojpura, and some NC lawmakers Madhya Madhesh but all of those proposals were rejected.
There were also proposals for making Birgunj Metropolitan City and Larger Birgunj as the capital but they too were rejected like Janakpur proposed by the ruling coalition for voting.
