Provincial assembly member of Province 2 Karima Begum has said daughters should be married off by 16 years.
Speaking in the provincial assembly on Thursday Begum, who in the past slapped a chief district officer for not arranging a luxury vehicle when she visited her district as a minister, argued that the government committed a mistake by bringing the law that puts a threshold of 20 years for marriage of daughters.
"It would be appropriate to marry our daughters by 16 as they can get spoiled if we wait for them to turn 20," the Federal Socialist Forum Nepal lawmaker stated. She claimed that the incidents of eloping have increased due to the law banning marriage of girls below 20. She demanded that the daughters should be married off young to save the dignity of parents if not for anything else.
She also advised the provincial government to arrange group wedding of daughters. "Poor parents can get their daughters wedded at a low cost due to this," she argued.
Begum has also invited controversy in the past saying the incidents of rape have increased due to short clothes worn by girls.
