The main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to form the Shadow Cabinet under parliamentary party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba.
NC leader Minendra Rizal told Setopati that the meeting of parliamentary party held at the Singha Durbar on Tuesday has decided to implement the decision taken earlier.
The party has invited lawmakers to stake claims identifying the ministries they want to head in the Shadow Cabinet. A lawmaker can stake claims for up to three ministries, according to Rizal. "We have given seven days to the lawmakers to furnish written claims," Rizal said.
The main opposition party has started preparations for the Shadow Cabinet almost 11 months after KP Sharma Oli was sworn in as prime minister. NC had announced it will form the Shadow Cabinet immediately after Oli assumed office.
But the party, that has included formation of the Shadow Cabinet in the parliamentary party statute to closely monitor the government's works, has initiated the process almost 11 months later.
Shadow ministers will closely observe functioning of the ministries they are assigned. They then raise the questions about their respective ministries in the parliament.
