Chairman of Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) Digambar Jha has resigned on Wednesday.
Minister for Communication and Information Technology and government spokesperson Gokul Baskota confirmed Jha’s resignation with Setopati.
The government on September 6 had appointed Jha as chairman of Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).
Minister Baskota had written to Jha on April 28 and instructed him to not work as chairman. The government soon revoked his appointment. But the government did a volte-face and reappointed him a few months later after Jha withdrew the writ petition he filed with the Supreme Court (SC) demanding his reinstatement.
Forty-three central committee members of the ruling CPN had demanded revocation of political appointments of corrupt and controversial persons including Jha on December 22.
The central members writing a letter addressing the chairman dup KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal had demanded the issue of political appointments of corrupt persons like Digambar Jha and honoring corrupt and controversial persons through the president on the government’s recommendation be discussed in the ongoing standing committee member, and the appointments be revoked.
They had concluded that appointments of corrupt and controversial persons against the government’s zero tolerance policy against corruption, and Prime Minister (PM) Oli’s announcement that he will not do corruption and also not allow others to do so have seriously hit the government’s image and popularity.
