District presidents of the main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC), who have gathered at Kakani of Nuwakot, have vowed to end factions in the party and form a single position on the proposed federal statute.
"This meeting has not been convened to benefit one faction or the other," President of Kaski Congress Krishna KC said about the two-day meeting that started Wednesday to discuss the proposed statute and the upcoming mahasamiti meeting. "We want to form a faction-less NC. It will be a unified party of the people."
The party presidents will form a single position on the statute, according to Dhading president Ramesh Dhamala. "We have come together to decide how to take the party forward on the basis of consensus," he stated. "Many issues will be discussed in the mahasamiti meeting. We will focus on the proposed statute."
Organizer of the meeting and president of Nuwakot Congress Jagadish Narsingh KC also confirmed that the district presidents will form a single position on the party statute. "The central committee members are talking along two lines now. We will give them a message to stand together through the Kakani meeting," KC told Setopati. "The statute should be prepared on consensus by accommodating even different opinions and take it to the mahasamiti meeting."
Acting president of Tanahu Congress Jit Prakash Ale said the Kakani meeting will also review whether the decisions taken at the last meeting of district presidents held in Hetauda in June have been incorporated in the proposed federal statute or not. The Hetauda gathering had stressed on elected office-bearers by cutting the number of nominated ones.
"The recommendations of Hetauda convention should be included in the statute. The party's organization could not be vibrant after the unexpected loss in election," Ale said. "There is a feeling that the party has failed in the role of a strong opposition at the central, provincial and local levels. We will listen to everyone and form a single opinion for reform of the party."
