Human rights activist Padma Ratna Tuladhar has passed away. His son-in-law Gauri Pradhan told Setopati that he passed away at Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu Sunday afternoon. He was 78.
He was admitted at Annapurna Hospital nine days ago after brain hemorrhage. He was then shifted to Norvic. He had chest infection in recent days.
He was elected to the then Rashtriya Panchayat defeating the then home minister Jog Mehar Shrestha in 1986. Tuladhar, who had contested the election with sun as election symbol, was backed by communist parties. He had demanded democracy on the floor of Rashtriya Panchayat.
He was elected to the first House of Representatives (HoR) after restoration of democracy in 1990 defeating Nepali Congress (NC) leader Mangala Devi Singh as an independent candidate with election symbol of the then CPN-UML, sun.
He then dedicated himself toward human rights and facilitated talks with the then Maoist rebels. He was a civil society leader during the Janaandolan II in 2006.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
