Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has chest infection and high blood glucose level. PM Oli's personal doctor Dr Divya Singh said he has been hospitalized due to high blood glucose level.
PM Oli, who is down with cold and fever for the past couple of days, is being treated at the Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center inside the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) premises since four Monday morning.
"He caught cold after Dashain and also had mild fever. His blood glucose level shot up Sunday. We have brought him to hospital to control glucose level as it could not be controlled at his residence," Dr Singh said addressing a press conference organized at the hospital premises to brief about his health. "It will be easier to inject insulin and administer antibiotics at the hospital."
PM Oli, who is also chairman of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), had offered tika to leaders, cadres and others during the Dashain festival for four days. It was tiring for him and he caught common cold after Dashain. He had fever since Friday evening and blood glucose level shot up on Sunday, according to Dr Singh.
"He has been kept at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) but he has not been kept there due to heart problems," she clarified.
Chief of Cardiology Department at the TUTH Dr Arun Sayami, Dr Singh and pulmonologist Dr Santa Kumar Das are attending to PM Oli. He will be kept at the hospital for a couple of days.
"PM does not need to be immediately taken abroad for treatment. He will return to normal condition by tomorrow," Dr Singh assured. "There is no problem in kidney. He has infection in respiratory tract."
Executive Director of Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center Dr Uttam Krishna Shrestha expressed hope that PM Oli will return to regular work after recovering for a couple of days.
Another chairman of CPN Pushpa Kamal Dahal, ministers, leaders and cadres of the party have thronged the hospital to take stock of his health.
PM Oli has been ill for the past few days. He missed the tea party organized by CPN at Bhrikuti Mandap on Saturday due to health problems. He was advised rest for three days but he attended the Sunday’s Cabinet meeting albeit for just 10 minutes. The meeting was earlier scheduled for Friday but was postponed in the eleventh hour apparently due to his poor health.
PM Oli had a kidney transplant 11 years ago and uses immunosuppressants to ensure that his immune system does not attack the foreign organ. A minor infection can have serious implications due to the compromised immune system. He has been going to Bangkok, Thailand for routine check-ups in recent years.
