Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Matrika Prasad Yadav has said that the Government of Nepal was serious regarding protecting the intellectual property by constitutionally establishing the same as the fundamental right.
He shared this during a meeting with Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Francis Gurry in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday. The Minister said that preparation is being made to revise the old laws related to the intellectual property and bring new acts in consonance with national interest.
On the occasion, the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies expressed that there were many challenges in implementing the IP related laws, pointing out the need of broader awareness among the general public on the matter, his private secretariat stated.
He said the research and studies in the academic sector, the geographical diversity and the strong laws on intellectual property especially patent rights would give a new identity to Nepal in the world map.
Stating that Nepal was in need of technical and non-technical support for formulating new laws related to intellectual property, awareness, producing the related human resources and an integrated office, Minister Yadav appreciated WIPO for its assistance to Nepal.
WIPO director-general Gurry pledged to provide the needed assistance for protecting the intellectual property.
Minister Yadav is currently in Geneva since Sunday in connection with taking part in the world investment forum of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
