It has emerged that YouTuber Roshan Pokharel, who used abusive language against Prime Minister Balen Shah, has been remanded in custody pending trial.
Pokharel was arrested by Panchthar police on April 10 after posting videos on YouTube containing insults and abusive language directed at Prime Minister Shah and various other leaders.
The government faced criticism following his arrest. He was then released into the custody of his grandmother and uncle on April 12.
While he was out on personal guarantee, police, through the District Government Attorney’s Office, filed charges against him at the Panchthar District Court under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2006.
On July 2, a bench of Judge Kumar Maskey ordered him to be remanded in custody pending trial in the case, according to the court’s registrar, Raj Kumar Niraula.
Pokharel was arrested two months after publishing the videos on his YouTube channel named "Hades." Following the court order, he is currently in prison pending trial.
