One person has died and another has been seriously injured after a grenade exploded during a training exercise conducted by the Nepal Army in Kailali district.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogendra Timilsina, spokesperson for the District Police Office, the explosion took place during a training exercise at the Gorange Barracks, the training school of the Nepal Army's Sudur Paschim Division, located in Lamkichuha Municipality-3.
Sergeant Himal Bikram Bista was injured in the explosion. He died while undergoing treatment.
Another injured soldier, Captain Himraj Joshi, has been airlifted to Kathmandu by helicopter for further treatment.
DSP Timilsina said that the grenade exploded during a training session at the Gorange Barracks on Thursday morning, leaving both soldiers critically injured. They were taken to Lal Ratna Hospital in Lamki at around 10:30 a.m. for treatment.
Sergeant Bista had sustained severe injuries to his right palm, while shrapnel had struck other parts of his body. Captain Joshi, who was standing nearby, was also injured by shrapnel. Authorities said Joshi is now out of danger.
The Nepal Army informed the Area Police Office in Chisapani about the incident at around 9:45 a.m.
Bista died at around noon while receiving treatment. Prior to that, Joshi had been flown to Kathmandu in a Nepal Army helicopter for further treatment.
