The Bagmati River caused significant damage in the capital during the previous monsoon.
Due to incessant rainfall, the river's water flow increased, submerging the riverbank areas. The water flow reached the streets in Balkhu, Thapathali, and UN Park areas.
Flooding in the Bagmati and submersion of riverbank areas during the monsoon is an annual occurrence.
This time, however, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has started preparations in advance.
Before the water level in the Bagmati rises, the municipality has deployed excavators to remove soil mounds and debris obstructing the water flow.
On Tuesday morning, an excavactor removed soil and waste from the river in the Balkhu area. To prevent the water level from reaching the banks even during normal rainfall, efforts are also underway to deepen the river by dredging.
This work is not limited to the Bagmati but is also being carried out in other rivers and streams within Kathmandu.
