The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority has lodged a corruption case against assistant at the Land Revenue Office, Chabahil Rajendra Basnet accusing of amassing unaccounted wealth of almost Rs 90 million.
The constitutional anti-graft body claims that Basnet could not show source of wealth of Rs 89.80 million out of the total wealth of Rs 97.331 million in his name and that of his family members.
The CIAA has lodged a case at the Special Court demanding he be jailed for two years, the amount of Rs 89.80 million he earned be confiscated and fined an equal amount.
The CIAA has deemed that only Rs 7,473,373 of the wealth was earned through legal means. Basnet was under investigation after the CIAA received a complaint stating that the assistant at Land Revenue Office was leading an unnaturally high lifestyle.
Basnet had joined service as office assistant 31 years ago. The CIAA had analyzed his income from the time of starting job until the last year.
It concluded that he could show source for only Rs 7,473,373 including his salary, savings, sale of land and vehicles, loan from different banks and financial institutions, and pension of his mother Tuku Kumari Basnet.
A case was filed in the Special Court even last year accusing him of issuing fake bills, not submitting the collected revenues and other illegal activities. The CIAA had recovered Rs 1.10 million from him while taking him under control following the complaint.
The CIAA says real estate worth Rs 67.40 million have been bought in the name of his wife Sita Basnet, and a house was constructed at a cost of Rs 6.20 million in the land of his mother. He has been found to have made investment and expenses in the name of other family members including nephews.
