Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has released a video message denying his involvement in any wrongdoing.
Thapa shared the video message on his Facebook account on Thursday afternoon.
In the video, he said:
“Rest assured – I, Gagan Thapa, your elder brother, younger brother, son, friend, and party president, am not standing on any weak moral ground. My hands are clean. The wrong questions should not be directed at me. Let us ask the right questions in the right place.”
Referring to an audio recording that has surfaced and is purportedly of Inam Sapkota, who is currently in police custody, Thapa said:
“I do not know where, by whom, when, or why that audio was recorded. I do not even know whether the person spoke voluntarily or was made to say those things. I do not have much interest in it either."
Thapa described the special general convention as an act of rebellion.
“The special general convention was a rebellion by the party's grassroots workers. Do those who rebel worry about what the outcome might be?" he said.
He further claimed that no money had changed hands in the Nepali Congress's political and legal battle.
“People talk about tens of millions of rupees, but in the fight for the official recognition of the Nepali Congress, in our political and legal battle, there has been no financial transaction of even a quarter – let alone rupees, nor has any improper act been committed."
