Bhishma Raj Angdembe, parliamentary party leader of the main opposition Nepali Congress, has said that the government must clarify the grounds, facts, and evidence on which Dan Bahadur Karki was removed as inspector general of police (IGP).
Pointing out contradictions in the statements made by the government spokesperson and the spokesperson for the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), he questioned under whose instructions the government was operating.
“The government spokesperson says the IGP was removed on the party’s instructions, but the RSP spokesperson claims that the party had issued no such instructions. So under whose instructions is the government actually operating? What kind of drama is going on in Singha Durbar and Baluwatar?” Angdembe asked.
He said that Karki was removed from the post of IGP despite having 17 months remaining in his tenure.
Angdembe expressed dissatisfaction, saying that while citizens were suffering from floods, landslides, displacement, and rising prices, the government was instead focused on changing the police leadership.
“Is changing the IGP really the country's national priority right now? Citizens are suffering due to floods in the Bhotekoshi and Budhi Gandaki. Displaced squatters are in a miserable state. Inflation has made daily life increasingly difficult. The country is heading towards a serious crisis, yet the government's priority was to remove the IGP,” he said.
He also raised serious concerns over the issue where mobile phones seized from a middleman for police investigation somehow ended up at the home of the prime minister's chief political adviser.
“Why did mobile phones seized for investigation end up there? What was there on the phones that needed to be deleted?” he asked.
