The Department of Money Laundering Investigation has raided the residences of people close to former chief justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.
According to a source, teams from the department carried out simultaneous raids at the residences of people close to Rana on Wednesday afternoon.
The source said that the department raided the homes of Nawaraj Thapaliya, Deepak Timilsena, and Nabin Raj Basnet, among others.
Police arrested Rana from his residence around midnight on September 26 and took him to the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office the same night.
He was released from there only at 2 p.m. on September 27. Police and the government had cited a security threat as the reason for his arrest. However, subsequent developments indicate that authorities were seeking to detain and investigate him.
Police are also investigating a person known as Inam Sapkota, who is considered close to Rana. During the investigation, authorities reportedly found conversations with Armed Police Force Additional Inspector General Banshi Raj Dahal on Sapkota’s mobile phone. AIG Dahal was subsequently suspended.
