The Supreme Court has ordered the release of Rishiram Kattel, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN).
On Tuesday, a bench of Justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Tek Prasad Dhungana issued the order to set Kattel free.
Kattel had publicly announced a boycott of the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. Following this announcement, police arrested him on February 18, citing concerns that his activities could negatively impact the election process.
After Kattel’s arrest, a habeas corpus petition was filed at the Supreme Court on his behalf. Hearing the petition on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled in Kattel’s favor and ordered his release.
