UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel defeated in Dang-2

CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has been defeated in the House of Representatives (HoR) constituency of Dang-2.

Common coalition candidate Rekha Sharma of CPN (Maoist Center) has defeated him by 196 votes securing 26,877 votes. Pokharel received just 26,681 votes.

The Election Commission, however, has yet to officially announce the final result.

Pokharel had not contested the HoR election in 2017 and served as chief minister (CM) of Lumbini having been elected to the provincial assembly from Dang until internal dispute in the then ruling CPN and subsequent split of the party forced him out.

He was first elected to the HoR on UML ticket in 1994 but lost the next election.

He was elected to the First Constituent Assembly (CA) in 2008 through the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system while he was defeated in the Second CA election in 2013.
