Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has called arrest of chairman of the student union close to CPN led by Netra Bikram Chand and advocate Chiranjeevi Dhakal illegal.
Dhakal, who is also a member of the NBA unit in Lalitpur District Court, was arrested from a press conference held at the Union House on Friday.
NBA Chairman Chandeshwore Shrestha has called the arrest illegal. "The NBA has already issued a press release stating that a person participating in a press conference peacefully cannot be arrested without any grounds," Shrestha told Setopati. "Illegal arrest of even a commoner, not just an advocate, is wrong."
NBA had issued a press statement on Sunday demanding Dhakal's release claiming that his arrest has violated the Constitutional and legal rights of an advocate to do his profession in a free manner.
The police, on the other hand, have claimed that Dhakal was arrested for his affiliation to the Chand-led party. "We have arrested him in accordance to the law as he was found to have been actively working with affiliation to the Chand group that is involved in violent activities," Spokesperson with Kathmandu Police SP Ashok Singh said.
