The death toll from Monday’s avalanche in Dolakha's Yalung Ri area has risen to seven.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato of the District Police Office said that seven of those who had gone to climb Dolma Khang peak in Ward No. 9 of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality died in the avalanche.
According to him, eight others who were injured in the avalanche have been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.
“Based on the information provided by those involved in the rescue operation, five foreign nationals and two Nepalis have died so far,” Mahato said. “We have already sent eight injured people to Kathmandu for treatment.”
Exact details of the deceased foreigners’ nationalities are still being verified. Although seven deaths have been confirmed, the bodies have not yet been retrieved from the site.
On Monday evening, a joint team from all three security agencies was mobilized for the rescue operation.
A 50-member combined force comprising personnel from the Armed Police Force Nepal Border Outpost (BOP) Lamabagar, the Nepal Army, and Nepal Police has been deployed to the site.
The avalanche struck at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
