Police have removed the tents set up by people who have been staging a sit-in protest at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu for months.
On Tuesday evening, police used loudspeakers to announce that the tents would be removed. Police had urged the protesters not to stay there overnight, citing possible health problems from sleeping in tents and increased security risks.
Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Thapa of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, said that the tents of those who had been staying at Maitighar for months were removed on Wednesday morning.
According to him, the protesters can continue to sit at Maitighar during the day while holding placards and voicing their demands. They were asked not to stay overnight in tents because of security risks.
“If anyone has no relatives to stay with at night and nowhere else to go, we are ready to arrange appropriate accommodation,” SP Thapa said. “They can stay during the day. We have only stopped them from putting up tents and turning the area into a temporary residential space.”
He said that if anyone faces difficulties finding a place to stay at night, they can contact the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, or the police, which can coordinate assistance.
He added that there is no restriction on events and demonstrations held at Maitighar during the daytime.
