A debris-laden flood in the Therang Khola, which forms the boundary between Wards No. 2 and 4 of Chumanubri Rural Municipality in Gorkha, at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday damaged four houses, a hydropower project, and a suspension bridge.
Pema Gyalpo Lama, chair of Ward No. 4, Namrung, told Setopati that the flood completely swept away three houses and damaged another.
It also damaged a hydropower project and a suspension bridge.
Lama said that the 100-kilowatt Namrung-Therang Khola Micro Hydropower Project was damaged by the flood. The project had been built at an investment of around Rs 70 million.
“Forty households had been using electricity from this project. The flood breached the project’s dam and damaged other infrastructure as well,” he said.
According to Lama, another 15-kilowatt hydropower project was still under construction and had not yet been completed. It also sustained some damage.
The houses belonging to Nurbu Ongyal (Nurbu Chhiring), Urgen Chhyoden, Lhakpa Bhuti, and Dorje Gyalzen of Namrung were affected, with three of them completely swept away.
The District Police Office, Gorkha, said that there were no human casualties in the incident.
Gorkha Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said that the damage was caused by a debris-laden flood that had been temporarily blocked upstream before suddenly surging downstream.
As the Thorang Khola flows into the Budhi Gandaki River, authorities have urged residents living along the Budhi Gandaki riverbank to remain alert.
