A car and the body of a man have been found burnt in Kirtipur, Kathmandu.
The car, bearing registration number Ba 5 Cha 3038, caught fire on Tuesday in an open plot of land in Sumlangkot Chowk, Tyanglaphant, Kirtipur Municipality-1.
Locals tried to put out the fire with water after suddenly noticing the car on fire. Police also attempted to control the fire using fire extinguishers, according to Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, superintendent of police at the District Police Range, Kathmandu.
SP Bhattarai said that locals and police opened the car door after seeing a person inside, but were unable to pull him out because of the large flames.
According to SP Bhattarai, the fire has now been brought under control. However, both the car and the man inside were completely burnt.
The deceased man was found in the driver's seat. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
A team from the District Police Range and the Kirtipur Police Circle has reached the scene and is investigating the incident.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, the identity of the deceased has been confirmed.
According to SP Bhattarai, the deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Suresh Chandra Shrestha, a resident of the same ward.
“The deceased has been confirmed as Suresh Chandra. We are conducting further investigation,” he said.
According to police, Shrestha was also the owner of the car.
