International Sagarmatha Day is being celebrated with various events in Nepal on Thursday to commemorate the first successful human ascent of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.
On May 29, 1953, Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary set foot on the summit of Everest for the first time. This historic day is commemorated annually as International Sagarmatha Day on May 29.
The government has planned to celebrate the day in a grand manner by organizing various events this year as well. A main organizing committee chaired by the tourism minister has been formed to mark International Sagarmatha Day.
As part of the celebrations, a morning procession was held from Thamel to Basantapur on Thursday. Climbers, tourism entrepreneurs, and others took part in the procession.
